Black Wildebeest (Connochaetes Gnou)
Also known as the white-tailed gnu, this impressive ungulate is native to Southern Africa. It has been widely hunted for decades as game, food, and eliminated as pests. With captive upbringing and reintroducing to the wild, the animals have managed to recover their populations.
They are quite unique looking animals, with huge horns, a mohawk like man, a tuft of stiff fur from their snout and a long white tail that waves like a flag when running. These characteristics make it distinct from other ungulates on the African plains.
Their enormous battering ram heads are excellent for rutting as well as defense against predators, and can do a great deal of damage with minimum impact to itself.
They are popular trophies in game reserves.
